Maharaja (King) Jai Singh built the five observatories in the western part of central India. The most prominent and best preserved is the Jantar Mantar, which means literally ‘calculation instrument’.

Jantar Mantar was built between 1727 and 1734  at his then new capital of Jaipur. It consists of multiple uniquely shaped buildings, each of which has its own astronomical function. This unique observatory has drawn the attention of scientists, artists and architects from all over the world.

This Jaipur observatory has 14 major geometric devices designed to measure the time to the nearest second and to track the location and orbit of stars,  the slope and distance of planets, as well as predict eclipses and weather changes.

Today, the observatory is quite a popular tourist attraction in India. Local astronomers still use it to predict the weather for farmers.
