This healthy breakfast recipe is one that helped me make it through the cold Canadian winters raw.  The oatmeal is softened with apples and this easy recipe is packed with superfoods.  This favorite raw food recipe is made with oat groats. Rolled oats are steamed open and so not raw, so to make oatmeal as a raw recipe, we use oat groats. I use steel cut oat groats that have been cut into smaller pieces and so are easier to soften. The texture is great. It is soft, not quite as soft as oatmeal, but still very satisfying and I like to add chopped nuts and some dried fruit which also adds to the texture, as well as taste.

Raw oatmeal is great to eat just on it’s own and I often do that. But it is also wonderful topped with almond milk and I think it is sweet enough but you can add extra sweetener if desired.

Click here to make your own almond milk, and trust me, once you get into the habit of it, it is hard to go back to buying the pasteurized cartons of it.  The fresh tastes best, is very easy to make and more economical too!

Raw Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup steel-cut Oat groats
3 to 4 Apples
¼ cup Nuts: Almonds, Pecans or Walnuts – chopped
¼ cup Dried Fruit: Raisins, dried Cranberries or Goji Berries
1 tsp Cinnamon
1 Tbsp Maple Syrup or Agave

note: I often combine different types of dried fruit and nuts in the recipe.

Directions

Place the oats in a bowl. If steel-cut oats are hard to find, pulse chop whole oat groats until coarsely chopped in a spice grinder or food processor. Peel and core apples and puree in a food processor. Mix the apples in with the oats and add the rest of the ingredients. Mixture should be fairly wet, if not add a bit of water. Cover and let oatmeal sit together a few hours to soften oats before eating or make it the night before so it will be ready for breakfast. Refrigerate, if you will be letting it sit for over 12 hours before eating.

This recipe makes 4 bowls of oatmeal. I often make this much even if I am the only one eating it as it will stay for a few days covered in an air tight container in the fridge and it makes a great snack for any time of the day.

might be a dumb question, but.. the nuts that you add to your oatmeal recipe are pre soaked? or not soaked?

    • It’s always best to pre-soak nuts whenever possible. Usually i do when I make this abut a few times I have made it without soaking first. It will be delicious either way, but be healthier for you if you soak the nuts first.
